7 Identity Insights From the Great Commission
Looking at Matthew 28 Through the Lens of Identity
Here’s some value-added insights from Matt. 28.18-20 that support the pursuit of a “learner” identity—which I explained in my recent post:
To summarize the article: The meaning of word “disciple” is a “learner,” which was the term used to describe Jesus’ followers. Being a learner is not just a statement of our activity (what we DO), it’s a statement of our identity (who we ARE). Thinking about the Great Commission in terms of who we are adds a different level of understanding to living out our faith in Christ.
There are some key language and contextual details that support this understanding. But before we dig in, here’s the passage, for your benefit:
All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Mat 28:18-20 NIV)
